“They pu_ _ _ _ _ _ _ tuff” – A Clue That’s Got Us Stumped
Ah, the joy of a challenging crossword puzzle! You’re breezing through the downs, the acrosses are starting to fall into place, then BAM! A clue appears that sends you scrambling for your dictionary and a cup of strong coffee. Today, that clue for me was “They pu_ _ _ _ _ _ _ tuff.”
This little gem is definitely a toughie, and it’s got me scratching my head. The “pu” at the beginning immediately screams “puppy” or “pulp,” but neither of those seems to fit the context of the rest of the clue. The “tuff” at the end is equally perplexing. Could it be a slang term? A geological reference? Or something entirely different?
I’ve tried all sorts of strategies: analyzing the word count, considering possible synonyms, even consulting a thesaurus. But so far, this clue remains stubbornly unsolved.
